Evolution from a molecular Rydberg gas to an ultracold plasma in a seeded supersonic expansion of NO
We report the spontaneous formation of a plasma from a gas of cold Rydberg
molecules. Double-resonant laser excitation promotes nitric oxide, cooled to 1
K in a seeded supersonic molecular beam, to single Rydberg states extending as
deep as 80 cm below the lowest ionization threshold. The density of
excited molecules in the illuminated volume is as high as 1 x 10
cm. This population evolves to produce prompt free electrons and a

Sampling in the evaluation of ore deposits
Sampling is an error generating process and these errors should be reduced to a minimum if an accurate ore reserve estimation is to be made from the sample values. Error in sampling can arise from the sampling procedure as well as where and how each sample is taken from the deposit . Sampling procedure involves sample collection, sample reduction and analysis, and the error from each of these three stages has an equal influence on the total error of the process. Error due to sampling procedure should be identified and eliminated at an early stage in the evaluation programme. An ore deposit should be subdivided into sampling strata along geological boundaries, and once these boundaries have been established they should be adhered to for the evaluation programme. The sampling of each stratum depends on the small-scale structures in which the grade is distributed, and this distribution in relation to sample size controls sample variance, sample bias and the volume of influence of each sample. Cluster sampling can be used where an impractically large sample is necessary to reduce sample variance or increase the volume of influence of samples. Sample bias can be reduced by composing a large number of small samples . Sampling patterns should be designed with reference to the volumes of influence of samples, and in favourable geology, geostatistical or statistical techniques can be used to predict the precision of an ore reserve estimation 1n terms of the number of samples taken. Different are deposits have different sampling characteristics and problems which can be directly related to the geology of the mineralization. If geology is disregarded when sampling an are deposit, an evaluation programme cannot claim to give an accurate estimate of the ore reserves
The changing patterns of group politics in Britain
Two interpretations of ways in which group politics in Britain have presented challenges to democracy are reviewed: neo-corporatism or pluralistic stagnation and the rise of single issue interest groups. The disappearance of the first paradigm created a political space for the second to emerge. A three-phase model of group activity is developed: a phase centred around production interests, followed by the development of broadly based 'other regarding' groups, succeeded by fragmented, inner directed groups focusing on particular interests. Explanations of the decay of corporatism are reviewed. Single issue group activity has increased as party membership has declined and is facilitated by changes in traditional media and the development of the internet. Such groups can overload the policy-making process and frustrate depoliticisation. Debates about the constitution and governance have largely ignored these issues and there is need for a debate
Satellite laser ranging work at the Goddard Space Flight Center
Laser ranging systems, their range and accuracy capabilities, and planned improvements for future systems are discussed, the systems include one fixed and two mobile lasers ranging systems. They have demonstrated better than 10 cm accuracy both on a carefully surveyed ground range and in regular satellite ranging operations. They are capable of ranging to all currently launched retroreflector equipped satellites with the exception of Timation III. A third mobile system is discussed which will be accurate to better than 5 cm and will be capable of ranging to distant satellites such as Timation III and LAGEOS
Desperate housewives: An analysis of the characterisations of female gamblers portrayed in gambling movies in Hong Kong
This article examines portrayals of female gamblers in recent Hong Kong movies. The authors report that the depiction of female gamblers is very different from that of male gamblers in the movies made in the same period. Whereas the male gamblers are pitching a lonely and desperate battle against the evil opponent, the female gamblers portrayed in the movies are housewives or small-time players who gamble only for their personal gain. A general negative overtone in portrayals of female gamblers was interpreted as a reflection of the traditional view that discourages women from gambling. The shift of gambling themes in the Hong Kong movies has been identified to reflect the most salient concerns among Hong Kong residents. Such changes are attributed to particular social and cultural changes in the community
Hyper-complex four-manifolds from the Tzitz\'eica equation
It is shown how solutions to the Tzitz\'eica equation can be used to

Hypercomplex Integrable Systems
In this paper we study hypercomplex manifolds in four dimensions. Rather than
using an approach based on differential forms, we develop a dual approach using
vector fields. The condition on these vector fields may then be interpreted as
Lax equations, exhibiting the integrability properties of such manifolds. A
number of different field equations for such hypercomplex manifolds are
derived, one of which is in Cauchy-Kovaleskaya form which enables a formal
general solution to be given. Various other properties of the field equations
and their solutions are studied, such as their symmetry properties and the
associated hierarchy of conservation laws.Comment: Latex file, 19 page
Time evolution of a non-singular primordial black hole
There is growing notion that black holes may not contain curvature
singularities (and that indeed nature in general may abhor such spacetime
defects). This notion could have implications on our understanding of the
evolution of primordial black holes (PBHs) and possibly on their contribution
to cosmic energy. This paper discusses the evolution of a non-singular black
hole (NSBH) based on a recent model [1]. We begin with a study of the
thermodynamic process of the black hole in this model, and demonstrate the
existence of a maximum horizon temperature T_{max}, corresponding to a unique
mass value. At this mass value the specific heat capacity C changes signs to
positive and the body begins to lose its black hole characteristics. With no
loss of generality, the model is used to discuss the time evolution of a
primordial black hole (PBH), through the early radiation era of the universe to
present, under the assumption that PBHs are non-singular. In particular, we
track the evolution of two benchmark PBHs, namely the one radiating up to the
end of the cosmic radiation domination era, and the one stopping to radiate
currently, and in each case determine some useful features including the
initial mass m_{f} and the corresponding time of formation t_{f}. It is found
that along the evolutionary history of the universe the distribution of PBH
remnant masses (PBH-RM) PBH-RMs follows a power law. We believe such a result
can be a useful step in a study to establish current abundance of PBH-MRs.Comment: To appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys.
